SILVER SPRING, Md. & ST. Paul, Min. – 3M and Discovery Education have announced 31 state merit winners in 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge. As the country’s premier middle school science competition for 15 years 3M Young Scientist Challenge Young scientists have outstanding innovation features that use the power of STEM to improve the world.
The 3M Young Scientist Challenge Students in grades 5-8 are asked to identify a daily problem in their classroom, community, or world and submit a one- to two-minute video by contacting the science behind their solution. A respected and diverse group of judges, including 3M scientists and education leaders across the country, evaluated entries based on creativity, scientific knowledge and communication effectiveness.

The 3M Young Scientist Challenge This year’s 31 state honors winners selected for their passion for STEM, innovation, and excellent communication skills. Each State Merit Winner Challenge website receives special recognition and one-of-a-kind technology award packs.

In his fifteenth year, 3M Young Scientist Challenge Continues to inspire and challenge high school students to think creatively and apply the power of STEM to discover real-world solutions. America’s top young scientists have gone on to exhibit TED talk, patent files, nonprofit findings, Forbes 30 under 30 lists, ringing bells on the New York Stock Exchange, and the White House Science Fair. These young inventors have also been nominated for Time Magazine’s First Kid of the Year, The New York Times Magazine, Forbes, Business Insider and national television shows such as Good Morning America, CNN’s Kuomo Prime Time, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and more this year. Top 10 Young Scientists Challenge Finalists and honorary mentions will be announced on June 28, 2022. The finalists will travel to the 3M’s Innovation Center in St. Paul, Maine, where they will compete in the finals on October 17-18.
Awarded 3M Young Scientist Challenge 3M and complement the Discovery Education Program – Young Scientist Lab – which provides a cost-effective dynamic digital resource for students, teachers and families to explore, transform and innovate the world around them.
