A look at the impact of COVID-19 on student readiness and how institutions can

Pittsburgh, PA – It goes without saying that the COIVD-19 epidemic has affected higher education and students around the world. But to what extent? And how can organizations respond to changes in education? SmarterServices recently released data that reveals that both individual and technical skills have been affected by the COVID-19 epidemic and how much student preparation has changed over the last ten years. Student readiness has seen statistically significant changes and institutions may need to re-evaluate their programming to improve student success.

Data on how COVID-19 affects student readiness can be found in the National Readiness Report published by SmarterServices. The report measures central trends for student traits such as life factors and individual traits as well as several skill sets, including on-screen reading rate and memory, technical skills, learning management system skills, general technical knowledge, and keyboarding rate and accuracy. .

Qualities and skills are measured by the SmarterMeasure Learning Readiness Indicator, which has received more than 6 million students from more than a thousand institutions. Through the National Readiness Report, institutions can compare their student performance with other students nationally. This year’s report reviews multiple comparisons of readiness levels across several population categories, a four-year comparison to determine the impact of the epidemic on student readiness, and specifically how the Covid-19 epidemic affected student readiness during the quarantine period.

The quarantine period occurred mostly during the 2019/2020 academic year, forcing many organizations to close private classes and remove substantial amounts of instruction online. This change meant that not all students who were already involved in online learning were barred from learning by an online learning method. According to the data, of the eight scales measured by the assessment on a percentage basis, money for eight of them decreased during the quarantine period. In the quarantine year of the epidemic, the SmarterMeasure Learning Readiness Indicator was taken more than ever. The reported low level of student readiness combined with the low quality of emergency remote instruction compared to traditional online education raises concerns about the effectiveness of academic continuity efforts during epidemics.

The report further reveals that the average score on the Life Factors and Individual Attribution Scale has been steadily declining by almost two percentage points in the last four years. This is a significant observation because these scales measure students’ qualities, not skills. These measurements are not dependent on the delivery system, which means they are equally important for students studying online, hybrid or face-to-face. It’s best that institutions measure this data for all students and provide appropriate strategies for intervention and support because students are struggling more in this area than in the past.

In response to declining student quality, schools need to provide strong services to support students such as admissions coaching, academic counseling and mental health services. To address the declining technology skills, schools need to recognize that although social media and video streaming can be an influential part of students’ lives, information technology skills are often lacking. Schools need to provide training to strengthen students’ online learning strategies. This training should be included in orientation courses and new student onboarding programs. The elements of these programs need to be about not only “how to learn online” but also “how we can learn online at this institution”.
